Dr David Lloyd Mandry passed away Monday, Nov. 19th  at 2:00am

 by Roderick Owen

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

This is a  personal message to let you know that my dear
step-father, Dr. David Lloyd Mandry passed away early this morning at
about 2:00 a.m.  in his sleep. He was 90 years old and was a dearly loved
tadcu (grandfather) and a wonderful match for Mam (my mother Joan) for the
past twenty years. They were married on Thanksgiving weekend in 1987 in
Salem,Ohio and have lived for the past two decades in Lisbon, Ohio
and at a special cottage (with the name --Ty Twt) on nearby Guilford Lake.

Dafydd / David was always proud of the fact that he was born into
the Welsh community of Martins Ferry, Ohio and that his family was
originally from Llanelli, Wales; he attended college at Denison (in Ohio);
served in WW II in the Calif. and the Pacific theatre; and returned to enroll in
medical school at Temple Univ. For the next forty years, or so,  Dafydd was a
small town,  by-God -West Virginia physician and not until  retirement did
he (finally) decide  to take the matrimonial plunge. Mam (Joan) and he
have had a wonderful life together travelling across the USA (often to
Welsh/Cymraeg cultural and singing festivals), spending winters in
Marcos Island, Fla., hosting us (and many other friends and family from both
sides of the Atlantic) at their two lake-side cottages, and being involved
in the Lisbon Presbyterian Church  and many  community organizations.

The past two weeks have  been emotionally and physically grueling for
Joan, my mother, as she coped with the affects of  Dafydd's mini-stroke,
multiple medications for his heart and kidney, the switch from a hospital to
a nursing home, and the rapid decline of his core character and
personality. It seems that in keeping with his kind and gracious
character, Dafydd chose to die before we could see him in his mentally
deteriorated state and at time when the entire family had already
planned to come to Ohio. David Mandry's funeral will probably be held in a
Lisbon, Ohio funeral home this coming Saturday, Nov. 24th.

We all had come to love him so very much. Please keep my mother in your
thoughts and meditations,

     Roderic
