This year’s staff have all taught in past Welsh Heritage Week courses, and we are happy to welcome them back.
All of the teachers are native Welsh speakers who teach our language classes as well as teaching their specialties.
John Albert Evans, Lead Teacher John Albert is the Lead Teacher for Welsh Heritage Week.
He has been with WHW since 1988 and has been Language Director since 1990. Retired after 20 years as Welsh Language Organizer for Mid-Glamorgan, he now freelances as a schools inspector and serves as the Welsh language officer for the Rhondda Cynon Taf County Council. In addition, he teaches the Welsh language to politicians and
high-level civil servants.
Gareth Hughes Jones, Singing Gareth is an accomplished musician of considerable repute.
He conducted the acclaimed Cor Meibion Caernarfon (Caernarfon Male Choir) for many years, appearing with them at the 1988 National Gymanfa Ganu in Baltimore. A former producer for Sain Records and a school music teacher he is currently Administrator of the William Mathias College of Music. With only a few “misses,” Gareth has been a core staff member at WHW since 1989.
Elonwy Wright, Harp Lon started playing pedal harp whilst at school in Carmarthenshire, and won many competitions, including the Urdd and National Eisteddfodau. Over the last 10 years,
she has turned her attention to the study of traditional Welsh harp music and has taught herself to play the Welsh triple harp and the earlier Telyn Wrachiod (Welsh bray harp). Her main area of interest is the
music of South Wales in the 18th and 19th centuries. Lon teaches using the traditional oral method but also provides written music as required.
Dafydd Thomas, Folk Dance Dafydd Thomas is currently the leader of the well-known Welsh folk dance group, Parti Dawns Aelwyd Aberystwyth. The group is very active, participating in dance activities throughout Britain and overseas. Dafydd is a
skilled and enthusiastic teacher (and a seasoned WHW campaigner, having taught dancing and clogging outdoors under the trees in the infamous heat wave at WHW 2001 in Poultney!).
Jennifer Williams, Music Session Jenn is a music student at University of Wales, Bangor. She grew up in Bala and began playing violin at the age of eight. She played in her
school orchestra, the Meirionnydd Orchestra, full and string orchestras of Gwynedd, and the prestigious National Youth Orchestra of Wales. In additional to her classical studies, Jenn is very enthusiastic
about traditional Welsh fiddle music, and she teaches fiddle classes for the Society of Traditional Music of Wales.
